There are many things that I can do as your MP, but some that I cannot. Find out how I can help you here ...
Barbara Keeley has been elected as the new Labour Member of Parliament for the Worsley Constituency.
She was elected with 18,859 votes (51% of votes cast) and has a majority of 9,368. The Tory Candidate got 9,491 votes, the Lib Dem 6,902 and others 1,694.
I was brought up in Leeds attending Mount St Mary’s College there and I have lived and worked in this area since 1985. I studied at Salford University, gaining a BSc in Politics and Contemporary History.
In my early career I worked for a number of years in the computer industry for IBM, where I gained experience with manufacturing, retail and commercial companies and the public sector. I am a member of GMB Union, Lancashire region.
More recently I have worked as a consultant and manager with local, regional and national charities and voluntary organisations. In the last 3 years I have written three national reports on carer’s issues published by a large national charity. The reports followed a survey I co-ordinated on the Government’s National Strategy for Carers and further research into how NHS Primary Care can provide better support to carers. I enjoy this work on policy in social care as I believe it is an important step in making positive change to improve people’s quality of life.
I have also worked as a consultant and adviser on community regeneration projects across the North West. This work has given me knowledge on what is needed to support and involve communities in regeneration areas.
I have been an active and campaigning member of the Labour Party since 1988. I was a leading councillor in Trafford between 1995 and June 2004, representing a town centre ward in Sale throughout that time. I lead successful campaigns to protect open space and improve facilities for people with disabilities.
From 2002, I took the lead on developing better services for children in Trafford where I was a Board Member of the recently formed Children’s Trust. I have also been responsible for working more closely with Health Services and earlier, for developing Early Years and Childcare locally.
In July 2005, Barbara was appointed to the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the House of Commons. This committee examines the work of the Department for Constitutional Affairs. In previous sessions the Committee has looked at Immigration Appeals, Electoral Registration, Legal Aid and Family Justice. The committee has just launched an inquiry into the 'small claims' system.
Barbara is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Carers, Primary Care and Public Health, Regeneration, Trade Justice and she is Treasury/Secretary of the Tibet group. Her policy interests include Health, Carers, Regeneration and country interests include the EU and the Middle East.
I am married to Colin Huggett. Outside politics my interests include jogging to keep fit and listening to live music concerts (ranging most recently from Paul McCartney to Opera North).
