Barbara to run 10k to raise funds to keep older people warm and safe in winter

On Sunday 17th March Barbara will be taking part in the Wrap Up and Run Tatton Park 10k.

Barbara is running this race to raise money for Age UK and their Spread the Warmth campaign.  Donations will be used by Age UK to help provide warm food and emergency food packages for older people who can’t get out in extremely cold weather. The money could also be used to buy blankets, coats and heaters to protect against the cold.

Barbara said:

“Making sure that older people can stay warm enough in winter is a key priority for me, which is why I am taking part in the 10K race on 17th March.

“Age UK tell us that 24,000 people died unnecessarily from the cold across the country last winter.  These deaths are avoidable. Most of us can cope with freezing temperatures. But for many older people, sudden cold weather can make existing health conditions worse and can trigger fatal heart attacks, strokes and pneumonia. Older people who are frail can be trapped at home in the cold with nobody to turn to for help.

“I hope local people and businesses will support my run through sponsorship or making a donation to the charity. All money raised will be used by Age UK to help try and stop these avoidable deaths and keep frail older people warm.”
