Transport Minister agrees to meet Barbara and residents in Worsley to review proposals for M60

Barbara is continuing her campaign for the cancellation of  the unpopular scheme to add a lane to the M60 between junctions 12 and 15 at Worsley.

Barbara has urged Transport Minister Mike Penning to cancel the scheme because it will have a substantial negative impact on local residents and surrounding roads. Barbara feels that much of the current congestion on the motorway is caused by poor junction design which will not be helped by the creation of an additional lane.

Barbara tabled a Parliamentary Question on this and the Minister’s answer revealed the Government will wait until the current Spending Review is completed, will review all planned highways schemes and report the results in the autumn. The Transport Minister has also now responded to Barbara Keeley’s concerns by agreeing to visit Worsley in September to see the area that would be affected by the scheme, to meet her and local residents and to listen to their concerns.

Barbara said:

“I am pleased the Transport Minister has agreed to visit the site of the M60 Lain Gain scheme in Worsley this September. I hope that local residents who are affected by the lane gain scheme can meet the Minister to share their concerns about the impact the scheme will have on their quality of life.

“I hope the Minister will have a better understanding of the issues after the visit. The Highways Agency and the Department for Transport need to cancel this scheme, as it will have a negative effect on the lives of local people and is such poor value for money. When finances allow, we need a better scheme that will address the poor design of junctions 12 and 13 and take different action to reduce congestion.”
