People in Salford are rightly angry at the gridlock and chaos caused by roadworks on the East Lancashire Road and other routes into Manchester. Works on the A57 at Peel Green and Barton Lane can only add to this gridlock. We are also facing three years of roadworks on the M60 locally.

I have never supported either the M60 widening or the Leigh Guided Busway. I feel that the Guided Busway project is a waste of public money. In the guided areas, like parts of Ellenbrook, the Busway means the loss of trees and peaceful walking and cycling routes. I battled for months alongside residents of Ellenbrook as we insisted on adequate screening for those houses which face having double decker buses routed behind their homes.

After Ellenbrook, the route travels onto the East Lancashire Road. It is the roadworks on this and earlier parts of the A580 which are now causing such problems. I know that people travelling to work are constantly made late by the serious delays caused. People are leaving home earlier and earlier and still finding impossibly long tailbacks on the A580.

The Facebook page “Enough is Enough” describes the daily battles that people in Salford and Wigan are having just to get to work or to get their children to school.  With so many months of this chaos still to be endured, even the need for short-term additional roadworks causes alarm. Planned works to mend broken sewers on the A6 at Sharp Street caused worry to local people using the A6 as an alternative route to the beleaguered East Lancashire Road.

It is time that officers responsible for this project in Transport for Greater Manchester took action to alleviate the stress and anger their roadworks are causing to people in Salford and Wigan. I am therefore asking for Transport for Greater Manchester and Salford and Wigan Councils to set up an Independent Review of the impact of the Busway project.

We need action before peak Christmas shopping traffic levels at the Trafford Centre combine with the ongoing roadworks to bring local roads to a standstill.
