Barbara attends Walkden Monument unveiling

Barbara joined the Mayor of Salford, Cllr Bernard Murphy and His Grace, the Duke of Sutherland in unveiling the newly restored Walkden Monument.

The unveiling was organised by the Rotary Club of Walkden. The Monument was first erected in the centre of Walkden but was moved in 1968 to its present location next to St Paul's Church.

The Monument is dedicated to the memory of Harriet, Countess of Ellesmere. Harriet, together with her husband, built St Mark's and St Paul's Churches and their respective primary schools. The present Duke of Sutherland is descended from the Ellesmere family.

Barbara said:

"It was a pleasure to be present at the unveiling of this restored Monument. I was really pleased to see so many of the local primary and secondary school children there, especially those that came dressed in Victorian costume.

"The Monument leaves a lasting memory to someone who made a positive contribution to the life of Worsley. It is good that this Monument has been restored to be admired and treasured by the local community."
