Barbara backs Emergency Workers Protection Bill

barbaraBarbara has given her backing to the Emergency Workers Protection Bill, introduced to Parliament on Friday by Alan Williams, MP for Swansea West. Barbara also praised the Manchester Evening News for highlighting the issue.

The Bill proposes a range of extra measures that would help to prosecute those who attack and cause problems for Emergency Service workers at the scene of an incident.

Barbara said:

"I too welcome the Bill introduced by my right hon. Friend the Member for Swansea, West (Mr. Williams) and I congratulate him on his campaign to raise the issues it addresses. These are important issues affecting our emergency workers; we have heard today how they suffer from the modern scourge of unwarranted assaults while they are trying to save lives.

"There have, unfortunately, been some 350 attacks on firefighters in Greater Manchester in the past two years. The Manchester Evening News has run an effective campaign to focus attention on the issue, and I commend the paper and its reporter, Neal Keeling, for doing so."
