Barbara celebrates equal rights for carers

BK Harriet Harman CropBarbara has welcomed the announcement made by Equality Minister Harriet Harman that discrimination against carers will be outlawed in the forthcoming Equality Bill.

As the Government Whip for the Equality Office, Barbara will help take this important piece of legislation through Parliament in the next few months.

Barbara said:

“I am pleased the Government recognises that carers can experience discrimination because of their caring responsibilities and is taking now action to stamp it out. The Equality Bill will extend equal rights to carers by banning discrimination against people who are associated with someone who is disabled.

“In Salford over 20,000 people are carers – this legislation means those carers will be protected from discrimination at work and will ensure they get equal access to goods, facilities and services. This is a groundbreaking piece of legislation for carers and I look forward to helping take the Bill through Parliament in the coming months. ”
