Barbara celebrates free swimming success in Salford

Free swimBarbara is celebrating news that Salford Council has provided over 36,000 free swims for local residents since April this year. Over 6,500 free swims for the over 60s and over 29,500 free swims for under 16s were taken between April and June.

The Free Swimming Scheme is part of a £140 million Government programme to help people get active by the time London hosts the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012.

Barbara said:

“Swimming is a wonderful way to stay healthy and can involve all the family so I am really pleased so many people in Salford have taken advantage of the Free Swimming scheme.

“The council has made swimming free for over 60s and under 16s at all six Fit City pools in Salford. By offering free swimming to both groups, the council was eligible for £10 million from the Government to modernise facilities and this has given the pools a new lease of life.

“This is an excellent investment in the health and well-being of people in Salford.”
