Barbara remembers genocide victims on Holocaust Memorial Day 2009

candleBarbara showed her commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day by lighting a ‘virtual candle’ online, honouring all those who perished in the Holocaust. By doing so, Barbara pledged to uphold the memory of the Holocaust and oppose hatred.

Barbara said:

Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of the camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau and reminds us all of the need to reflect on the horrors of the Holocaust and other genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Darfur and Bosnia.

“This year’s topic, ‘Stand Up to Hatred’, highlights the importance of joining forces against hatred, prejudice and intolerance. Sadly, we can still see anti-semitism, Islamaphobia, Holocaust denial, racism and prejudice in our world today.

“I fully support the work of the Holocaust Educational Trust to teach children the history of the Holocaust. This is the best way to enable them to see the effects of hate and racism. It is essential that we continue to educate young people about the Holocaust and encourage them to work together towards a better future.”
