Barbara responds to job cuts at the Manchester Evening News

Salford advertiserFollowing the Guardian Media Group's announcement that it is making 78 journalists redundant and closing all its weekly newspaper offices in Greater Manchester, Barbara has responded in support of local media.

She said:

“Today we have the news that the local office of the Salford Advertiser is to be closed, as part of plans announced by the Guardian Media Group to make cuts across local news offices in Greater Manchester. I am very concerned about the major impact this will have on jobs of the staff of the Salford Advertiser and the knock-on effect on community here in Salford.

“I value the Salford Advertiser and the great work it does reporting local issues and concerns. Having the paper produced centrally in Manchester means we may lose this local voice.

“I am also sorry to hear about the proposed job losses and I hope that the situation of jobs in our local media will improve in future.”
