Barbara supports parents campaigning to save Sure Start

Save Our Sure StartBarbara has come out in support of parents campaigning to save Sure Start centres in Irlam, Cadishead and Walkden.

Government cuts of £100 million made to Salford City Council’s budget since 2010 mean there is now a struggle to keep services like the Sure Start Children’s Centres going in all areas. Other councils have also struggled to keep Sure Start services going and some have found ways to do so.

Barbara said:

“The Labour Government brought in Sure Start Children’s Centres in 1998, aimed at giving children the best start in life.  The centres offer early learning and childcare, health and family support services”

Parents tell me they are horrified at the thought of losing the vital services that Sure Start Children’s Centres provide. I feel very strongly that the Conservative-led Government should have protected the funding for Sure Start services, but they have not done so.”

“I understand that Salford City Council is coping with savage Government cuts to their budgets and they have been put in a very difficult position of having to make cuts to services. I hope there is a way to keep the vital services of our Sure Start Children’s Centres going and will support parents in looking at all the options.”
