Barbara welcomes new guarantees for pupils and parents in Salford

DCSF logoBarbara has welcomed plans to give parents and pupils in Salford new guarantees on what they will get from local schools.

The Schools White Paper recently published by the Schools Secretary Ed Balls sets out a Pupil Guarantee to give one-to-one tuition for children at risk of falling behind in English and Maths at primary school and the early years of secondary school. It also guarantees a place in school, college, training or an apprenticeship for school leavers.

The Parent Guarantee includes the right to regular information on their child’s progress and new School Report Cards to let parents know how local schools are doing. An annual survey of parents will also lead to a score for ‘parental satisfaction’ on the new report card.

Barbara said:

“Schools in Worsley constituency have been transformed over the last twelve years. The number of children leaving primary school getting to the expected level has gone up 20% in English and 16% in Maths.

“The White Paper launched recently by Ed Balls builds on this success by setting out new enforceable guarantees for pupils, including one-on-one tuition for those who fall behind and a guaranteed place in education or training for school leavers. The Parent Guarantee will give parents all the information they need through School Report Cards.

“This Government is investing in the next generation and I note that the Conservatives have so far refused to match Labour’s guarantee of a college or apprenticeship place for every 16 and 17 year old who wants to get a skill or learn a trade.”
