Barbara calls on Government to act urgently on unemployment

JobcentreBarbara has called for more urgent action from the Conservative-led Government to get local people back to work. Figures published this week showed that unemployment continues to rise in Worsley and Eccles South even though it has fallen nationally.

Figures released by the Office of National Statistics have revealed that unemployment in the constituency now stands at 7.4% compared to 6.4% two years ago. There are now eleven people chasing each vacancy in Worsley end Eccles South, which is more than twice the national average.

Barbara said:

“The Government has no cause to be complacent. Although the national figures have fallen this quarter, unemployment in Worsley and Eccles South continues to rise. One in ten of our young people are out of work but the Conservative-led Government axed Labour’s Future Jobs Fund. The number of people unemployed for twelve months or more has also doubled in the last year, which is worrying.

“The Government’s employment policies are failing those thousands of people locally who are looking for work. The double-dip recession was made in Downing Street and the Government’s flawed policies are pushing up unemployment here. I call on the Government to change direction and take urgent action to get more people back to work.”
