Barbara joined two-time Olympic medallist Rebecca Romero to support the Central Council of Physical Recreation’s (CPPR) Subs for Clubs campaign.
Romero, a track cycling gold medallist in Beijing and silver rowing medallist in Athens, was in the House of Commons to show her medals and tell MPs about the importance of community sports clubs.
The aim of CCPR’s Subs for Clubs campaign is to allow community amateur sports clubs to claim Gift Aid on junior membership subscriptions – just as organisations such as the National Trust are allowed to do on their subscriptions. Currently 51 per cent of sports clubs just manage to break even or operate at a deficit.
“I want to support local sports clubs which can help us to lead healthy and active lives. Community sport is the base from which our national success springs and I am particularly proud that in Worsley constituency there is a wide variety of sports clubs in which people can get involved.
“I support the “Subs for Clubs” campaign to allow sports clubs to claim Gift Aid on junior subscriptions as it will provide a much needed resource for local clubs who contribute so much to our community. For a relatively low cost, clubs would be able to improve their facilities and re-invest in vital kit. This is why I have lobbied the Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, Andy Burnham MP, on behalf of local sports clubs such as Little Hulton Cricket Club.”
