Barbara awarded silver medal for Sports Parliamentarian of the Year

Barbara has been named as a Sport and Recreation Alliance Sports Parliamentarian of the Year for 2012.

Barbara was awarded the silver medal in the awards for MPs and Peers, nominated for their work in Parliament to promote sport and to get it higher on the government’s agenda. She was nominated by the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation in recognition of her work to advance the cause of women’s sport in the last twelve months.

Sue Tibballs, chief executive of the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation decribed Barbara as “a passionate supporter of women’s sport at all levels. She helps in any way she can and is a fantastic advocate in Parliament, the media and in her constituency."

Making the award to Barbara, the chair of the awarding panel, Brigid Simmonds OBE, said:

“Barbara has worked tirelessly on behalf of women’s sport over the past year. She has been the driving force behind the All Party Parliamentary Group on Women’s Sport and Fitness, successfully mobilising colleagues to address challenges such as media coverage and low participation.”

Barbara received her silver medal from Olympic Gold Medallist, Duncan Goodhew MBE and she commented:

“I am thrilled to receive this award, which recognises the importance of women’s sport and the issues I have been raising in Parliament. I will continue to work to make sure that more girls and women get the opportunity to take part in sport and fitness activities in future.”
