After laying a wreath at the Cenotaph in Walkden on Remembrance Sunday, Barbara walked in the parade back to the Royal British Legion club in Walkden.
Barbara congratulated all those who had made the Remembrance Sunday service such a tribute to all those who have lost their lives in the service of their country.
Barbara also announced to those present at The Royal British Legion that she is once again helping to publicise grants in the “Heroes Return 2” programme. The programme provides funds for Second World War veterans wishing to attend overseas anniversary events at home or abroad to commemorate the end of the Second World War.
Grants up to £5,500 are available to pay travel and accommodation costs for the journeys. In previous years, veterans have used grants to commemorate the anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy in June and to attend September’s memorial events in Holland. Other veterans have returned to places including Italy, Greece, Malta, India, the Far East, and North Africa.
“Remembrance Sunday is an opportunity to pay tribute to all those who have lost their lives in the service of our country. The Remembrance Service at St Paul’s Church was very moving and it was good to see so many young people there paying their respects.
“Remembrance day is also a good time to recognise the excellent work done by The Royal British Legion to help ex-servicemen and women and their families.
“I am proud to once again support and help publicise the ‘Heroes Return 2’ programme. This funds commemorative trips by veterans to mark the anniversaries of events that led to the end of the Second World War. The programme is open to veterans who fought with or alongside British forces in the Second World War and are resident in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, as well as their widows and widowers.
“I encourage Worsley constituents who want to find out more about the programme and how to apply to contact me at my office in Walkden on 0161 799 4159.”
The Heroes Return 2 helpline 0845 0000 121 has also been set up to provide further information on the programme and details of how to apply.
