Barbara celebrates National Bookstart Day at Little Hutton Library

BookstartBarbara recently attended a celebration at Little Hulton Library to mark National Bookstart day. Parties to mark the day were held for children in local libraries across Salford.

At the Little Hulton event, Barbara presented a book to each child who attended. The theme was ‘favourite nursery rhymes’ and the children enjoyed singing, listening to nursery rhymes and stories.

Barbara said:

“It is important to ensure that children become interested in books at a young age as, if they do, they will do better at school and later in life.  Reading to children helps them to develop their language skills and it also helps develop the bond between parents and children.

“I am delighted to support National Bookstart Day.  By providing free books to parents at their local libraries, Bookstart encourages parents to read to their children from a young age

“The party at Little Hulton Library was good fun for the children and the adults who brought them. I would like to thank the staff at the library for their work on both the children’s party and the regular Bookstart sessions.”

Every library in Salford has a good selection of board books and picture books suitable for babies and toddlers.

The following free Bookstart gifts are available from the library:

  • Bookstart bag - 8 months
  • Bookstart Plus pack – 18 months
  • Bookstart Treasure chest - 3 years

If parents have not collected their gift from their health visitor at the clinic or nursery teacher at school, they should get in touch with local library staff to be issued with the appropriate Bookstart gift. Each gift contains a free book to share with a baby or toddler, and an invitation to join the library.

Salford Libraries and Information Service offers around 30 regular story-rhymetime sessions a week in libraries and children's centres, which are facilitated by Bookstart Development Officers and Community Children's Librarians.  Sessions include singing, rhyme, a story and craft and they are attended by babies and children from 2 months to 3 year old.
