Barbara has congratulated the Friends of Walkden Station group on winning further improvements to the station. The Friends have campaigned for some time for much needed improvements to security and information and help for passengers at the station. Their campaigns have now been rewarded with the news from Greater Manchester’s Integrated Transport Authority that Walkden station will get improved customer facilities including new security cameras, information screens, help points and PA systems.
“The Friends of Walkden Station have been great campaigners for improvements at Walkden, letting Network Rail and Northern Rail know what needs to be done to improve conditions for passengers. In May this year, we saw the first Sunday train service for 40 years come through Walkden and this was thanks to tireless campaigning by the Friends group which I supported by lobbying Ministers.
“Now passenger facilities at Walkden will be improved through better security equipment and information systems. These have also been areas on which the Friends group have campaigned for some time. The station has been greatly improved by the cleaning and planting done by volunteers from the Friends group using grants from the City Council to pay for planters.
“I congratulate the Friends of Walkden Station and I will continue to support their campaigns in future. Further improvements would include reducing overcrowding on trains, improving connections on rail services, cutting the gap between the platform and the trains to a safer level and improved disabled access. I hope their campaigning can win more gains and improve services even more in future."
