Barbara Keeley MP backs action to prevent assaults on Salford fire fighters

firefightersBarbara is backing action to deal with assaults on local fire fighters and has raised the issue with the Communities Secretary John Denham.

Barbara has been campaigning to prevent assaults on fire fighters in Salford and Worsley constituency since becoming an MP. She has previously backed a Bill put forward by her Labour colleague Alan Williams. This was the Emergency Workers Protection Bill, which made it a specific offence to assault, obstruct or hinder emergency workers. The Bill came into force in 2007.

Barbara said:

“Physically assaulting a fire fighter on the job is unacceptable. Our fire fighters save lives working in very dangerous circumstances and they deserve our respect.

“I am asking the Communities Secretary John Denham to work with the Fire Brigades Union to develop a national strategy to tackle this issue. I would like to see more preventative measures put in place, such as a national awareness campaign. I would also like to see a requirement for all local fire authorities to introduce procedures to reduce the number of assaults.”
