Barbara pledges support for ‘ground-breaking’ new asthma research roadmap

Barbara has pledged her support for a ground-breaking asthma research roadmap which sets out the priorities to revolutionise diagnosis, treatment and care for the millions of people living with asthma.

In Salford over 15,000 people live with asthma and 1 in 11 people live with the condition across the country. Despite this relatively little is known about asthma.

Asthma UK has led a three-year collaboration with international clinical, academic, industry and patient experts to identify the most important unanswered questions about asthma. It aims to ensure research investment is targeted in the most effective way.

The charity has now launched a new asthma research roadmap, which outlines 15 key areas for future asthma research. Asthma UK hopes that this will help focus investment on the most promising treatments, medical-technology devices, self-management tools and healthcare systems to address the unmet needs of people with asthma.

Barbara said:

“I welcome the new asthma research roadmap. Across Worsley and Eccles South people of all ages are affected by asthma. Worryingly in the UK someone has a potentially fatal asthma attack every 10 seconds and three people die every day from asthma-related causes.

I believe that the Asthma UK roadmap has the potential to improve care and ultimately to find a cure for asthma, helping people in Salford and across the country who live with asthma. By drawing on the expertise of globally-renowned UK scientists and other specialists, it marks a real positive step forward in the work to stop asthma attacks and I hope that it will help to transform the lives of people living with asthma.”
