Barbara pledges to promote cycling

I have pledged to promote cycling and to work towards making cycling safer and more accessible in Worsley and Eccles South.

Cycling can offer real benefits to our environment, our economy and people’s health. Making cycling safe and accessible will improve our local environment and will help to reduce pollution and congestion - this is a particular problem in Worsley and Eccles South, where air quality is poor.

I am disappointed that the Conservative-led Government has not made cycling a higher priority over the last five years and has failed to provide the certainty and focus we need on this policy.

A Labour Government will develop a National Cycling Action Plan to promote cycling and will reintroduce national standards to reduce road deaths and serious injuries. We will also ensure that large road vehicles are equipped to reduce the risk of collision and that all children and young people are educated in cycling safety.

Labour has also committed to spending £250 million on cycling infrastructure, safety and integration so we can develop a road network that takes cyclists needs into account. This is an addition to the previous Government’s commitment to spend £114 million on cycling in our cities across the country, which we will match.

Labour will take wider action to reduce road deaths and injuries, including encouraging local authorities to adopt 20mph limits on residential roads where appropriate and introducing cycle safety assessments on all new transport schemes. We will also devolve control over transport spending to local authorities so that communities can deliver on local priorities.

If I am re-elected on the 7th May I will continue to campaign to make cycling safer and more accessible.
