LABOUR MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR WORSLEY AND ECCLES SOUTH

Barbara says Government has broken its promise to protect funding for Sure Start Centres

Sure Start logoBarbara is concerned at new figures which show that 31 Sure Start Centres have closed across the country since the General Election. This is despite promises made by the Conservative-led Government that these vital services would be protected.

Families in Salford are already facing the biggest squeeze on their incomes for 80 years due to the rise in VAT, rising prices for food and fuel and pay freezes.  Families with children are facing cuts in Child Benefit, a freeze in Child Tax Credit and less help with costs of the childcare that helps them to work.

Barbara said:

“I am concerned to hear about the closure of the Sure Start Children’s Centres across the country.  The Conservative-led Government has broken yet another election promise and it is families which will bear the brunt of the Government’s cuts.

“Labour created Sure Start Children’s Centres to provide the important support that families with children need and the centres provide essential services. In Salford we have a number of great Sure Start Children’s Centres all of which do excellent work. I know that local people value the help and support these important centres provide.

“I will be campaigning to protect our local Sure Start centres from cuts from the Conservative-led Government.”
