The junction of the East Lancs Road at Newearth Road/Ellenbrook Road
The junction of the East Lancs Road at Newearth Road/Ellenbrook Road

Since I became the Member of Parliament for Worsley in 2005 I have campaigned for safety improvements to the East Lancs Road. In 2009, after a long campaign lobbying Salford Council and Wigan Council, I successfully got the speed limit reduced to 50mph. This was further reduced in 2013 to 40mph, which I fully supported.

I am particularly concerned about pedestrian safety at the junction of the East Lancs Road connecting Ellenbrook Road to Newearth Road.

The accident rate along the whole of the East Lancs Road is high but since 1998 there have been thirty collisions at this junction alone. Six of these collisions were serious and two, including the most recent one, were fatal. In November 2019 a driver caused the death of a local resident and his dog as they were crossing the East Lancs Road at this junction. Abdelkader (Tony) Dhrif was a well-known member of the community and his death prompted constituents to contact me with their concerns about pedestrian safety at this junction.

I support greater pedestrian safety at this junction and I would like to know the views of as many local people as possible about this issue.  If you agree that changes need to be made at this junction to ensure pedestrian safety, I would be grateful if you would complete the petition below and ask your family and friends to do so too. The more responses we have, the more effective our campaign will be.
