The Government’s Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Act 2022 comes into force on 30th June 2022, and it sets future ground rents to zero and prevents fees being charged on top of peppercorn rents. However, it does nothing for those already trapped in a situation of escalating ground rents.

The Conservative Government’s Queens Speech (which sets out the governments priorities for the following year) did not mention this urgent issue and fails to address the plight of people trapped on escalating ground rents.

When Labour is next in government, Labour will take retrospective action to ensure those trapped on escalating ground rents are not exploited by greedy freeholders.
