Recently many local people have contacted me to express their worries about and their anger at the policies of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat Government. The biggest worry that most people have is about jobs. Currently there are more than 10 people unemployed for every job vacant locally.
Government cuts are forcing Greater Manchester Police to cut 1,400 police officers and 1,500 staff. The Conservative-led Government is abolishing Salford Primary Care Trust and forcing efficiency saving across the NHS which will mean job losses. Further jobs will be lost when Salford’s Court is closed in December 2011, despite a long campaign by the council and all 3 Salford MPs to save it.
The Conservative-led Government has forced more than £40 million of cuts onto Salford Council, meaning the loss of 500 jobs.
For those searching for a job each week can mean a fruitless and anxious search. Young people have told me that they feel they are constantly being knocked back and that there is not enough help for them to find a job. Under Labour, young people could stay on at school or college with the help of the Educational Maintenance Allowance and the Future Jobs Fund meant hundreds of jobs for young people in Salford. Both of these have now been scrapped.
The Conservative-led Government has no plan for growth. They say that there will be new jobs in the private sector. I hope there will be more jobs there but there is little Government support for this. The Government are abolishing our Regional Development Agency, which worked with businesses and Salford Council to help the growth of our local economy.
It is time the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats in Government thought again about their reckless policies which are costing the jobs of so many people in Salford.
