I am backing Pancreatic Cancer UK’s ‘Two Months More’ Campaign to keep the chemotherapy drug Abraxane available for eligible pancreatic cancer patients across the UK.
The Cancer Drugs Fund is a fund that enables patients to access drugs that are not routinely available from the NHS. Abraxane was added to list of approved drugs to be paid for by the fund in March 2014. Abraxane has been shown in trials to extend a patient’s life by an average of just over two months, and in some cases significantly more. This is of huge importance when the average one year survival rate for patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the UK is less than 20%.
There is pressure to reduce the costs of the Cancer Drugs Fund. Abraxane’s place on the list is being reconsidered and a decision will be reached on the 15th December.
