You may have heard that a new system of postage stamps is being introduced.

Royal Mail says that these changes are being implemented because there has been an “enormous amount of fraudulent activity concerning stamps, such as printing illegal stamps and the re-use of old stamps”.

Therefore, Royal Mail is taking measures to reduce fraudulent activity by introducing new stamps with bar codes on them.

The stamps will still look familiar and will feature the profile of Her Majesty the Queen on a plain coloured background with a bar code on the side.

You can carry on using any non-barcoded stamps you have until 31 January 2023. For most people that will mean they have time to use up any of the old stamps they have before that date.

If you have too many stamps to use them up before this date you can exchange them for new barcoded ones through Royal Mail’s ‘Swap Out’ scheme.

You can swap them one-for-one up to 200 hundred at a time using the Royal Mail’s Freepost service but please be aware these cannot be swapped at a Post Office branch.

There is no time limit for pre-paid envelopes, you can use them until you run out.  Over time they will change but they will not expire.

To find out more information about this scheme or to find out how to ‘swap out’ your stamps please see the information online https://www.royalmail.com/sending/barcoded-stamps
