Barbara has backed a Government consultation on plans for a National Memorial of remembrance for those killed in terrorist attacks overseas.

Following the terrorist attacks in Tunisia last year, the Prime Minister announced that funding would be made available for a Memorial dedicated to all UK nationals who have been killed in terrorist atrocities overseas.

Barbara wrote to the Prime Minister to ask for national recognition of the sacrifice of Alan Henning, who was brutally murdered by Daesh (ISIL) in 2014. The National Memorial for people killed by terrorists overseas is the Government’s preferred recognition.

The online consultation for the National Memorial was launched on 22nd January 2016. It will gather the views of those who have been affected, whether personally or through someone they know, on how they think the National Memorial should be developed. This includes views on where the memorial will be located.

Barbara said:

“I am pleased to hear that the Government has announced plans to install a site of remembrance for all UK nationals who have been killed by terrorists and in terrorist atrocities overseas. This consultation will allow those who have been affected by terrorism to have their say on how they think the National Memorial should be developed.

“Many families of the victims of terrorism do not have a place where they can grieve. It is appropriate that we have a national memorial for those killed by terrorism abroad. Our local hero, Alan Henning, is one those victims and his sacrifice must never be forgotten. I encourage anyone who knew Alan to have their say.

“The National Memorial will be an enduring physical memorial where families and other people suffering a loss through terrorism will be able to grieve and remember the person they lost.

“The consultation is open to everyone and closes at midday on Friday 4 March. If you would like to have your say on plans for a National Memorial, you can do so here.”
