Barbara has called on the Chief Executive of Asda to think again over the contract changes that are being forced on Asda employees at Asda Eccles and other local Asda supermarkets.

The proposed new Contract Six will be forced on employees because the only current alternative is to lose their jobs with no redundancy package.

The new clauses in Contract Six will have a significant impact on working conditions and pay and the situation leaves many employees fearing for their jobs and for their futures.

The main concern Barbara has about Contract Six is the Flexibility Clause which will force employees to work any time, any place and anywhere with only four weeks’ notice. Many staff have responsibilities outside the workplace and imposing a new contract will not change workers’ childcare, caring, studying, family and other commitments outside work.  However, loyal workers could lose benefits such as holiday days and the right to work bank holidays. There are also concerns about the hourly pay-rate and the need for assurances on staff pay-rate for 2020.

In response to a recent consultative ballot, 93% of respondents told GMB Union that they did not agree with the contract changes which were being forced on them.

Barbara says:

It is deeply concerning that such a large employer in Worsley & Eccles South is offering their staff with no choice other than to accept these new contracts or risk losing their jobs.

“Asda staff with caring commitments are going to be hit by any loss in flexibility – this is an awful position for any company to put their dedicated staff into. Shoppers would be horrified to know Asda are leaving staff without a choice. I do believe that Asda should think again.

“I understand GMB union members in Asda have won some improvements to the original contract proposed but I have now written to Roger Burnley, Chief Executive of Asda, to ask that he works constructively with the union, its members and staff in Asda to seek a better deal and secure a decent future for all Asda staff.
