On Thursday 25th July Barbara presented a petition to the House of Commons stating the objections of local people to the Green Belt in Boothstown being designated as land suitable for development.

The petition, which has been signed by over 1000 local people, said:

To the House of Commons.

The petition of Residents of Boothstown,

Declares that they and other affected parties are opposed to GMA 31 of the revised Greater Manchester Spatial Framework which removes the land east of Boothstown from the Green Belt; and further that development on this land would be to the detriment of the quality of life and wildlife to the residents of Boothstown.

The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Government to do all in its power to stop this land being removed from the Green Belt and protect this green space from development.

The petition will now be forwarded to the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government for their initial consideration. In accordance with the resolution of the House of Commons on 25 October 2007, “substantive petitions should normally receive a response from the relevant government department” and this should normally be within two months of the petition being presented.

Barbara says:

I know that the team behind the campaign have worked hard to collect over one thousand signatures supporting this petition.

“I support this petition. I oppose GMA 31 of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework which proposes that the land East of Boothstown should be designated for low density development.

“I have real concerns about the damaging impact of extra traffic on Leigh Road and the surrounding roads which would be generated by this new development. This will also increase the level of air pollution which is already high in this area. It is reasonable to assume that this new site could generate around 900 cars travelling in and out of this estate every day, using the same road that thousands of other people will be using to visit RHS Bridgewater.

“I have heard from constituents who are worried about the extra strain on local services such as GP surgeries, dentists, nurseries and schools. GMA 31 does not mention any extra infrastructure which will be put in place for education or GP provision for these extra households where it is reasonable to consider that there may be over 1200 new residents. Constituents often tell me that their GP service is fully booked for weeks before they can make an appointment.

“This Green Belt land is cherished by the local community for recreation and as a green open space in an expanding town. As the MP for Worsley & Eccles I have always fought to protect Green Belt land and I will continue to do so.”
