“I want to congratulate the past and present staff of Walkden Library on serving the community of Walkden so well for the 40 years since they opened in 1966.
“The Library building is a much loved local landmark and a gateway to a wealth of knowledge and information through loan of books, music and now using computers.
“Well done on 40 years of first class service.”
Senior Librarian, Chris Carson said:
“I’m really pleased with the response from the public, it’s a terrific way to celebrate 40 years of library service. We manage a wide range of activities, including children’s story times and interactive topics like local history and music.
“Local people get a sense of place and identity about what Walkden was like in the past, and how social and cultural change has been managed.
“The Library building reflects what was going on at the time, the old premises on this site had outlived their usefulness and this building reflected the new reality.”
Margaret Devitt, who worked at the Library between 1966 and 1985, said:
“I’m so pleased to see so many people here, although I’m not sure how many remember me now.”
