You may have seen the news that McColl’s went into administration and it was bought by Morrison’s. Over the next 2 years the majority of existing McColl’s stores will convert to being a Morrison’s Daily store.

However, Morrison’s says that some McColl’s stores have been loss-making for some time and there are some stores that it believes have no realistic prospect of a turnaround and so those stores will be closed for good.

One of these closures will be the McColl’s at 141 – 143 Walkden Road, Walkden M28 7QH. This closure will include the closure of the Post Office at this store.

This is really bad news for local residents as I know that the Post Office is an important part of the community and serves an important service, especially for older people.

The Post Office will close on Sunday 15 January 2023 at 5.30pm.

The Post Office says that it will have posters in branch to inform customers of this closure.

I have written to Grant Shapps MP, Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Secretary, to raise my concerns about this closure and about how the lack of Government support in the Post Office will result in more franchised branches closing and also puts stand-alone branches at risk too, as they face financial challenges in this cost-of-living crisis.
