Barbara has welcomed the announcement that a Labour Government would abolish the Bedroom Tax with effect from day one of taking office.

Labour has promised that, if elected on May 7th they would make changes which would abolish the Bedroom Tax with immediate effect. This would be done by sending money to councils across the country to compensate for the Tax meaning families should no longer have to pay the charge. Labour would then bring in legislation to abolish the Tax formally as soon as possible.

Barbara said:

“I have campaigned against the Bedroom Tax and I am proud that one of the first things a Labour Government would do is to abolish this unfair Tax.”

“1,425 households in Worsley and Eccles South are hit by the Bedroom Tax, which means they have to find £720 a year to pay the charge. If the Conservatives win the election and do not abolish the Bedroom Tax then it will cost each family affected by the Tax in the North West an extra £3,700 over the course of the next Parliament.”

“The Bedroom Tax is one of the most unfair policies coming from the Conservative-led Government. Two-thirds of households affected by this unfair charge are disabled people and over 60,000 carers are affected.”

“For a fairer future, we need a Labour Government and we need to see an end to this Tax.”
