Barbara joined staff from Salford Carers Centre to raise awareness of carer’s rights. Friday 28th November 2014 marks Carers Rights Day. This is a day which seeks to raise awareness across the country about the information, advice and practical support available for carers.

There are 10,857 unpaid family carers in Worsley and Eccles South, and 6.5 million across the UK, who provide care and support to family and friends. Salford Carers Centre had a stand at Salford Royal Hospital to offer information to patients and visitors so that they were aware of the support available to carers.

Barbara said:

“Carers Rights Day is about making carers aware of the help and support that exists for them. Whilst many carers find caring worthwhile they can experience financial difficulties and health problems because of their caring responsibilities.

Each year an estimated 3,560 people become carers in Worsley and Eccles South whilst 3,500 find their caring responsibilities coming to an end. Becoming a carer is something that can happen quickly and many carers are not aware of the financial and emotional support that is available to them. Carers Rights Day is a great way to raise the profile of the support that is on offer. It also provides an opportunity to recognise the value of carers within our local community.

I believe the current help available to carers does not go far enough. That is why I have campaigned over many years to bring in measures to help identify carers and give them the support they need. I also introduced a Bill in Parliament to exempt carers from the Bedroom Tax. I will continue to campaign to make sure carers in Salford and across the UK are given the support they deserve.”
